AI is one of the most powerful technologies ever created, and its impacts on the world could be miraculous, disastrous, or anything in between (including a combination of disasters and miracles!). Currently, the pace of progress is much faster than the pace of society’s response and adaptation to it, but social innovators can do a lot to close this gap. This session will provide an introduction to AI & society to set the stage for subsequent conversations, introducing a holistic lens – benefits and harms, both today and in the future – that we can use to develop and continually evaluate AI-related philanthropic strategies.

Ian is CEO and founder of the Effective Institutions Project. Over the course of more than two decades, he has partnered with dozens of grantmaking foundations and philanthropic families to design impactful programs, allocate resources effectively, and collaborate productively toward a thriving future. All told, his work has guided the distribution of more than $250 million in grants and spending to improve people’s lives worldwide.
