In our first conversation, we heard directly from May Yang of the Minnesota Council on Foundations, who shared a firsthand account of what unfolded in Minneapolis during the largest immigration enforcement operation in U.S. history — and how local newsrooms became critical infrastructure when their communities needed them most.
Building on that on-the-ground experience, this session turns to what’s happening across the country. We’ll share how Press Forward is thinking about where investment is needed most — including high-stakes election states, news deserts, and under-resourced urban communities where the information gap is greatest.
We’ll hear about what newsrooms and communities are planning — from bilingual voter guides and community candidate forums to text-message distribution and sense-making journalism that helps residents understand how redistricting and polling access shape their lives.
What strikes us most is how innovative and creative these newsrooms are, even in extraordinarily challenging times. Faced with thin staffs and limited resources, they are finding new ways to reach their communities, build trust, and tell the stories that matter.
